Urban Fox Welfare: Managing Coexistence

Urban red foxes have adapted successfully to city environments, but their welfare is affected by traffic, pest control practices, and human interactions that range from feeding to persecution, requiring thoughtful management approaches.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Urban foxes experience welfare harms from traffic (the primary mortality cause), mange (which causes intense itching, secondary infection, and death without treatment), and occasionally deliberate persecution including snaring and poisoning. Mange epidemics in urban fox populations cause widespread suffering that can be partly addressed through community treatment programs. Road mortality causes immediate severe trauma. The welfare of urban foxes is also affected by indirect human impacts: loss of green space reduces foraging range, and direct feeding by well-intentioned people can cause dependency and nutritional problems. Coexistence management that maintains fox welfare while reducing human-wildlife conflict is the most sustainable approach.
