Bearded Dragon Welfare: UV Light and Temperature Gradients

Bearded dragons are popular reptile pets but their needs for UV-B radiation, precise temperature gradients, and appropriate diet are frequently misunderstood, leading to preventable suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Metabolic bone disease causes severe chronic suffering in bearded dragons kept without adequate UV-B lighting. Bones become soft and pliable, causing spinal curvature, limb deformities and pathological fractures. The pain of this condition is significant and the disease is almost entirely preventable with correct husbandry. Impaction from swallowing substrate causes intestinal obstruction, progressive discomfort and death without veterinary intervention. Temperature gradients that are too narrow prevent thermoregulation - bearded dragons must move between hot and cool areas to regulate their body temperature. Inappropriate diet during juvenile stages causes stunting and organ dysfunction. The frequency of these preventable conditions reflects widespread gaps in knowledge among bearded dragon owners.
