Stick Insect Welfare: Overlooked Invertebrate Pets

Stick insects are popular, low-maintenance pets, but their welfare needs - including appropriate humidity, food plants and space for molting - are often underestimated.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Stick insects are often treated as disposable starter pets but they have genuine welfare needs. Failed molts are a common cause of death - if the enclosure is too dry or too small for the insect to hang vertically during molting, the exoskeleton cannot be shed correctly causing limb loss, deformity or death. Food plant quality is critical - wilted or inappropriate plants cause malnutrition in animals that cannot switch food sources easily. The defensive leg-shedding response is an extreme stress reaction that leaves animals with permanent impairment. While the subjective experience of stick insects remains scientifically uncertain, the precautionary principle of minimizing obviously aversive conditions applies to their care.
