Fish do not simply tolerate crowding — they suffer from it. The physiological evidence is unambiguous: crowded fish have chronically elevated stress hormones, suppressed immune function, and elevated susceptibility to infectious disease. Social stress from competition for space also drives fin biting, aggressive wounds, and disrupted feeding. Lower stocking densities improve individual fish welfare measurably and reduce antibiotic use, demonstrating that welfare and production system health align.
