Dairy cow welfare has received increasing attention from retailers, producers and regulators. Understanding recent progress and remaining challenges helps evaluate the effectiveness of industry welfare commitments.
Progress in dairy cow welfare has been real but uneven. Lameness reduction demonstrates that focused attention on a specific welfare problem can drive measurable improvement. The expansion of RSPCA Assured dairy supply has meant that welfare standards are improving for a growing proportion of the national herd. However, significant welfare problems persist: cow-calf separation causes acute distress; calves born to dairy cows are frequently euthanized at birth if male or unsuitable for beef; zero-grazing systems deny behavioral needs; and the high metabolic demands of modern dairy genetics cause chronic physiological stress. The dairy industry's welfare journey is ongoing and consumer engagement with welfare standards continues to drive progress.
