Millions of coral reef fish are collected annually for the home aquarium trade. Collection methods, transport mortality and captive welfare present significant concerns for this colorful but welfare-neglected group.
The welfare situation in the marine ornamental fish trade is one of the most serious and least recognized in the pet industry. Cyanide fishing causes hidden internal damage that kills fish after apparent initial recovery - purchasers often do not connect their fish's death weeks later to the cyanide exposure at collection. The total mortality across the supply chain - from collection through transport to home aquarium - means that for every fish maintained alive in a tank, multiple others have died. The behavioral complexity of reef fish - complex social structures, large territory requirements, specialized dietary needs - means that even surviving fish in home aquariums may not be able to express their full behavioral repertoire.
