Domestic rats are highly intelligent, social animals whose welfare is heavily dependent on companionship, cognitive stimulation, and opportunities for natural behaviors. They are among the most cognitively complex companion rodents.
Rats are widely used as laboratory research animals, and this research has revealed much about their cognitive and emotional lives that directly informs companion rat welfare. Rats show play behavior with characteristic ultrasonic vocalizations (50kHz range) linked to positive emotional states, and these can be used to assess enrichment quality. The short lifespan of rats means welfare failures compound quickly, making husbandry knowledge particularly important for owners. Respiratory disease is the leading welfare concern and is closely linked to ammonia from soiled bedding.
