Slow lorises are nocturnal primates whose 'cute' appearance has made them victims of the viral pet trade. Their welfare needs make them completely unsuitable as pets, and trade is driving wild populations toward extinction.
Slow loris welfare is intimately connected to demand driven by social media viral content. The appearance of lorises being stroked or raising their arms is misrepresented as happiness - the raised arm posture is actually a defensive response, and the animal is frequently in distress. Slow lorises in the pet trade virtually always die prematurely from inappropriate diet, stress, lighting damage, or wound infection from tooth clipping. Their welfare needs - nocturnal activity, complex arboreal environments, diverse natural diet, and freedom from human contact - cannot be met in any home setting.
