US Catfish Farming Welfare

Channel catfish is the most commercially farmed fish in the United States. Welfare considerations in catfish aquaculture include stocking density, water quality, handling, and slaughter practices in an industry that receives relatively little welfare scrutiny.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Catfish welfare science is less developed than salmon or trout welfare research, partly because catfish are air-breathing with some ability to survive poor oxygen conditions - which historically led to assumptions of lower sensitivity. However, catfish demonstrate robust stress responses, learned fear, and wound-related behavior changes consistent with pain experience. The earthen pond system, while less intensive than indoor RAS, presents welfare challenges in late summer when oxygen depletion and thermal stress peak. Consumer awareness of catfish welfare is minimal compared to salmon, creating an advocacy opportunity.
