Feline inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition causing significant welfare impacts through nausea, pain, weight loss, and dietary restriction. Long-term management requires specialist dietary and medical approaches.
Feline IBD welfare requires long-term management commitment from owners and veterinarians. The disease causes chronic nausea and discomfort - cats with active IBD are experiencing ongoing welfare compromise that may not be obvious from their behavior alone. Treatment response assessment uses validated quality-of-life measures alongside clinical signs. Dietary restriction to novel or hydrolyzed proteins requires complete exclusion of all other food sources - difficult in multi-cat households or for cats with outdoor access. The welfare of cats with well-controlled IBD can be excellent, but the condition requires lifetime monitoring because relapse and progression to lymphoma are both possible.
