Dairy Bull Calf Welfare and Rose Veal

Male dairy calves have no role in milk production and have historically been shot at birth or exported for intensive veal. The rose veal sector offers a welfare-improved alternative that gives male dairy calves a meaningful life.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dairy bull calf welfare represents one of the clearest cases where consumer choice directly determines whether a category of animals lives or is killed at birth. The choice between shooting newborn calves and providing them with a few months of reasonable life in a rose veal system is mediated by consumer demand for rose veal. The welfare of rose veal calves under good management - group housing, adequate space, access to roughage and solid bedding, social interaction - is positive for most of their lives. The alternative (shooting at birth) is no life at all, but the economic driver for rose veal production must come from consumer willingness to buy the product.
