The development and validation of alternatives to animal testing — the Three Rs of Replace, Reduce, and Refine — is gradually reducing animal use in product safety testing.
Every animal used in testing that can be replaced by a validated alternative represents a genuine welfare improvement: suffering that is eliminated rather than merely reduced. The progress in replacement technology over the past decade has been substantial: organ-on-chip systems can model complex physiological interactions, human cell lines provide human-relevant toxicology data, and computational models predict chemical hazards with increasing accuracy. The barrier to faster replacement is primarily regulatory: test methods used in safety submissions must be validated against existing animal test standards, a process that takes years. Accelerating validation acceptance and resourcing alternative method development represents the fastest route to reducing animal testing globally.
