Domestic rats are highly intelligent, social animals with sophisticated emotional lives that make them rewarding pets when their welfare needs are properly understood.
Domestic rats are sentient animals with complex social and cognitive needs that are frequently underestimated. Solitary housing, small cages and barren environments cause significant suffering. Rats need at least one companion, a large cage with climbing opportunities, and regular handling and mental stimulation from their owner. Their short lifespans and tendency toward tumours and respiratory infections mean access to exotic-animal veterinary care is important. Treating rats as disposable or low-value pets is a significant welfare concern.
