Inter-dog aggression is a common behavioural problem with significant welfare implications for the dog displaying aggression and for dogs on the receiving end.
Dogs displaying inter-dog aggression often suffer from chronic fear and anxiety that underlies reactive behaviour. Traditional approaches that used punishment to suppress aggression frequently failed to address the emotional cause and often made behaviour worse by increasing fear. Evidence-based approaches using counter-conditioning, desensitisation and management - combined with veterinary assessment for anxiety medication when appropriate - achieve better welfare outcomes for all dogs involved. Surrendering rather than investing in professional behaviour support is often unnecessary with appropriate help.
