Clouded leopards are among the most difficult felids to manage in captivity due to their specialist behavioural needs and tendency toward intraspecific aggression.
Clouded leopard welfare in captivity requires understanding of their exceptional climbing abilities, solitary nature and the risk of intraspecific aggression. Enclosures must provide substantial vertical space with strong climbing structures at height. Pair introductions require careful management with safe escape spaces - many zoo clouded leopard deaths have resulted from male aggression. The Species Survival Plan has developed protocols that have substantially improved reproductive success and welfare. Hand-rearing should be avoided where possible as it compromises long-term social behaviour.
