Zoo Elephant Space Requirements and Welfare

Elephant welfare in zoos is one of the most studied and contested areas of zoo animal welfare, with space, social complexity and exercise key to welfare outcomes.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Elephant welfare in zoos remains deeply challenging because the species' fundamental biological needs - vast space, complex family social structure, daily exercise - are extremely difficult to meet in any zoo context. Even the largest zoo elephant enclosures are orders of magnitude smaller than wild ranges. The evidence for chronic welfare deficits in zoo elephants is substantial - shorter lifespans, high foot disease rates, reproductive failures and stereotypic behaviour are documented across many collections. Elephant sanctuaries with large acreages, social freedom and limited public contact generally achieve better welfare than traditional zoos.
