Precision livestock farming technologies including sensors, cameras and AI are transforming the ability to monitor individual animal welfare at scale in commercial farming.
Precision livestock farming offers genuine welfare improvement potential by enabling continuous, individualised monitoring that human stockpersons cannot achieve manually. Early detection of lameness, disease or behavioural change allows faster intervention and reduced suffering duration. However, technology cannot substitute for stockpersonship or address systemic welfare problems - it works best when combined with skilled people committed to welfare. Data from precision systems could also improve welfare assurance by providing verifiable outcome data to retailers and certifiers rather than relying solely on audit snapshots.
