An estimated 700 million dogs worldwide are stray or community animals facing welfare challenges from disease, injury, malnutrition and conflict with humans.
The welfare of the world's stray and community dog population represents one of the largest unaddressed animal welfare challenges. These animals face chronic food insecurity, disease, injury from road traffic, human persecution and exposure to harsh conditions. Mass culling, historically used for population control, is both inhumane and ineffective since vacuums are rapidly refilled. Evidence-based approaches combining TNR, vaccination and community stewardship produce better welfare outcomes and public safety benefits. Investing in these programmes represents high-value welfare impact per animal helped.
