Cat Environmental Modification for Behaviour

Environmental modification - changing a cat's living space to better meet its needs - is a first-line intervention for many feline behaviour problems including urine marking and aggression.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Environmental modification is a welfare intervention that addresses the root cause of many feline behaviour problems: insufficient environmental resources to meet territorial and security needs. A cat that feels insecure in its environment experiences chronic stress that manifests as marking, aggression or avoidance. Providing adequate vertical space, hiding opportunities, separate feeding and litter stations for each cat, and predictable routines addresses these needs. Environmental modification is usually more effective and more welfare-positive than punishment for behaviour problems, addressing the cause rather than suppressing the symptom.
