Companion Animal Dental Disease Prevention

Dental disease affects the majority of dogs and cats by age three and is a leading cause of preventable pain, yet owner awareness and preventive dentistry uptake remain low.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dental disease is one of the most prevalent causes of chronic pain in companion animals and one of the most preventable. Animals rarely vocalise dental pain, and owners frequently attribute behavioural changes - reduced playfulness, guarding food, reduced grooming - to ageing rather than pain. The welfare burden of untreated dental disease is substantial and daily. Starting tooth brushing in puppies and kittens builds acceptance and prevents disease. Regular veterinary dental assessments allow early intervention before painful disease establishes. The cost of prevention is far less than treatment and the welfare improvement is immediate.
