Zebrafish are increasingly used in biomedical research and require specific social and environmental conditions to maintain welfare in laboratory settings.
Zebrafish welfare in research settings requires attention to social housing, environmental complexity and the specific stressors of common procedures including fin clipping, injection and tank transfer. Social isolation causes measurable stress in zebrafish. Barren tanks without structure increase anxiety-like behaviour. The 3Rs framework applies to zebrafish but refinement of zebrafish-specific welfare has lagged behind mammalian species. Growing evidence for zebrafish pain sensitivity supports application of analgesic protocols for painful procedures. Improved zebrafish welfare guidelines from the NC3Rs and equivalent bodies are available and should be followed.
