Urban pigeons are among the most visible urban wildlife, yet they are often managed with lethal control that is ineffective and causes unnecessary suffering.
Urban pigeons occupy a contested space in human attitudes toward urban wildlife: simultaneously kept as racing birds and despised as pest species. Lethal control — shooting, poisoning, and trapping — kills large numbers of birds while achieving no lasting population reduction, as remaining birds breed to fill available resources. Birds killed by poisoning may suffer prolonged deaths. Injured pigeons with entangled feet from string and debris suffer chronically without intervention. Fertility control programmes and reduced feeding in problem areas address population concerns humanely and effectively. Pigeons that are individually rescued and rehabilitated demonstrate cognitive complexity that challenges their dismissal as nuisance animals.
