Organic Farming and Animal Welfare Outcomes

Organic farming standards typically require higher welfare practices, but outcomes vary and the organic label alone does not guarantee consistently high welfare across all metrics.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Organic farming typically delivers welfare improvements over conventional intensive production, but the organic label is not a guarantee of high welfare in all respects. Organic standards primarily address system inputs (antibiotic use, feed composition, stocking density maxima) rather than welfare outcomes directly. A poorly managed organic farm may have worse welfare on specific measures than a well-managed conventional farm. The best welfare outcomes come from farms that combine good management, appropriate stocking density, high-quality housing and enrichment, and skilled stockpersonship - whether or not they are certified organic.
