Livestock Transport Water Access Welfare

Access to water during livestock transport is frequently inadequate, causing dehydration and associated welfare suffering in millions of animals moved annually.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Water deprivation during transport is a serious welfare problem that is underreported and inadequately enforced. Dehydration causes progressive physiological stress, reduced immune function, weight loss and in severe cases death. Animals cannot ask for water or protest its absence in ways that are easily observed by transport inspectors. The combination of legal requirements that are technically reasonable but poorly enforced, inadequate water infrastructure and inadequate inspection creates conditions where millions of animals suffer preventable dehydration during transport annually. Strengthening inspection, improving vehicle water systems and reducing journey durations all improve welfare.
