Alpaca shearing is a necessary procedure for animal welfare but handling methods and shearing technique significantly affect the welfare experience for individual animals.
Alpaca shearing welfare centres on restraint method and handler skill. The traditional lying-down restraint method causes visible distress through forced unusual posture, duration of restraint and unfamiliar handling. While distress is time-limited and necessary for the animal's welfare, minimising it through skilled handling and appropriate equipment is important. Standing shear methods developed by some practitioners reduce restraint duration significantly. Pre-shearing training to acclimatise animals to handling reduces the fear component of the procedure. Post-shearing thermal management to prevent cold stress in recently shorn animals is an important welfare consideration.
