Surgical correction of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome provides welfare relief for affected dogs - understanding the procedures and outcomes helps owners make informed decisions.
BOAS surgery welfare assessment reveals a complex picture. Surgery provides significant relief to affected individuals - dogs unable to exercise comfortably in moderate temperatures gain dramatically improved quality of life. The welfare case for surgery in moderate to severe cases is strong. However, BOAS surgery welfare should not normalise the underlying problem: we are performing corrective surgery to address a deliberately created deformity. The welfare priority is preventing the need for surgery through breed reform - reducing or eliminating selection for extreme brachycephalic conformation. Supporting affected individuals through surgery while simultaneously advocating against breeding for conformation requiring surgical correction is the appropriate welfare position.
