However, the welfare of individual wild fish at the moment of capture and death receives far less attention. Fish dying by suffocation on ice remain conscious for minutes to hours. Trawl net catches involve pressure changes, crushing, and prolonged restraint before death. Individually spiked fish killed by rapid brain destruction experience near-instantaneous death — a welfare-vastly-superior method that is also associated with higher flesh quality. The convergence of welfare and quality incentives offers a market pathway for welfare-superior wild catch methods that does not depend solely on consumer welfare concern.
