Bearded Dragon Metabolic Bone Disease Prevention

Metabolic bone disease is one of the most common and preventable health problems in captive bearded dragons, caused by incorrect UV-B lighting or calcium and vitamin D3 deficiency.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Metabolic bone disease causes chronic pain, deformity, and premature death in affected bearded dragons, yet it is almost entirely preventable with correct husbandry. The problem stems from a disconnect between reptile biological needs and commercial product marketing - UV-B bulbs are sold without clear guidance on placement distance, replacement schedules, or appropriate output levels. Many keepers use incorrect bulbs or position them incorrectly, providing inadequate UV-B for vitamin D3 synthesis. Once advanced MBD develops, bone demineralization causes fractures from normal movement, representing continuous welfare compromise.
