Laying Hen Welfare in Free-Range Systems

Free-range egg production is widely perceived as high-welfare but welfare outcomes vary enormously based on range quality, stocking density, and flock management.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Free-range egg labeling creates consumer expectations of high welfare that the reality frequently fails to meet. Flocks of 30,000+ hens in large sheds may be labeled free-range even when outdoor access is limited to small pop-holes that most birds never reach. Range quality matters enormously - hens will not use open, exposed range without vegetation and overhead cover that mimics natural habitat. Feather pecking at rates affecting the majority of flocks is a clear welfare indicator of inadequate conditions even in certified free-range systems. The welfare advantages of free-range systems over caged systems are real but conditional on management quality - poorly managed free-range can be worse for individual hen welfare than well-managed enriched cages.
