Traditional veal production involves severe welfare compromise, but rose veal alternatives offer a more humane way to use male dairy calves that would otherwise be slaughtered at birth.
Traditional white veal production is one of the most welfare-compromised farming systems ever developed - calves kept in individual crates unable to turn around, fed iron-deficient liquid diets to maintain pale meat color, and denied the social contact and behavioral opportunities fundamental to bovine welfare. The EU ban on white veal crates represented a significant welfare advance, but the global trade in veal means these practices continue in exporting countries. Rose veal production transforms what was a wasteful welfare problem (male dairy calves killed at birth) into a product that uses the animal's full life more respectfully, allowing group housing, roughage access, and behavioral expression while using animals that would otherwise have no value in the dairy system.
