Stone Loach and Freshwater Fish Welfare

Stone loach and other small freshwater fish face welfare challenges from habitat degradation, water quality decline, and the impacts of invasive species in UK river systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Freshwater fish welfare in UK rivers is primarily threatened by the cumulative effects of agricultural intensification, sewage discharge, and abstraction that have degraded water quality and habitat across much of the country. Individual fish experiencing hypoxia from algal blooms suffer oxygen deprivation that causes distress before death - a welfare event that is repeated throughout affected rivers during each pollution incident. The scale of freshwater fish welfare compromise from pollution is enormous but invisible to most people because it occurs underwater and affects animals whose capacity for suffering is not widely appreciated. Fish kills that produce floating fish bring temporary attention to a chronic problem, but the welfare cost of non-lethal oxygen stress is ongoing and poorly quantified.
