A global transition toward more plant-based food systems is one of the most impactful changes possible for animal welfare, and understanding the welfare implications is essential for effective advocacy.
Food system transition is arguably the single highest-impact policy and behavioral intervention available for animal welfare at scale. The mathematics are stark: reducing land animal farming by even modest percentages eliminates suffering for numbers of animals that dwarf all other welfare interventions combined. However, achieving meaningful food system change requires understanding the barriers: cultural identity around meat consumption, economic accessibility of alternatives, agricultural infrastructure and employment tied to animal farming, and the political power of agricultural lobbying. Welfare-motivated food system change also requires attention to equity - plant-based dietary shifts should not increase food insecurity for low-income populations who already face dietary constraints.
