Livestock Emergency Slaughter Welfare

Emergency slaughter of farm animals too injured or ill to transport requires on-farm humane killing competence and equipment availability to prevent prolonged suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Emergency slaughter welfare is a critical competency for livestock farmers that is sometimes inadequately trained for and equipped. An animal that has broken a leg, suffered a severe injury, or is in acute distress requires immediate humane killing - delays while waiting for a veterinarian or equipment cause prolonged, preventable suffering. The welfare imperative is that death should be as rapid and painless as possible, requiring the operator to be competent with the method being used and to have appropriate equipment immediately available. Failed emergency killing attempts that fail to render the animal insensible immediately represent welfare failures that training and equipment provision can prevent. Requiring farms to have trained personnel and appropriate equipment as part of farm assurance schemes would significantly reduce emergency killing welfare failures.
