Dehorning is one of the most common and painful surgical procedures performed on cattle, yet pain management remains inconsistently applied across farming systems globally.
Dehorning without adequate pain management is one of the most significant preventable welfare failures in cattle farming. The procedure causes acute pain during the procedure and sustained post-operative pain measurable through behavioural and physiological indicators. The cost of local anaesthetic and NSAID pain relief is minimal relative to the welfare benefit. Polled (naturally hornless) genetics offer a long-term solution that eliminates the need for dehorning entirely.
