Companion Animal Welfare

Pet Fish Welfare and Aquarium Standards

Pet fish are among the most commonly kept yet least welfare-considered companion animals, often housed in conditions that cause chronic stress and significantly shortened lifespans.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Fish welfare is the most neglected area of companion animal welfare. Millions of fish are sold in containers far too small to support healthy life, with buyers having no knowledge of their complex needs. The fishbowl aesthetic has created normalised suffering at enormous scale. Fish are sentient animals that experience stress from poor water quality, inappropriate companions, inadequate space, and lack of environmental complexity. Improving pet fish welfare requires both individual owner education and reform of trade and retail standards.
