Beef feedlot welfare centres on the gap between what cattle are adapted to — movement, foraging, varied diet — and what feedlot production provides. The abrupt diet transition from forage to high-energy grain creates metabolic stress and bloat risk. Respiratory disease, the leading cause of feedlot cattle death, is driven by the combination of transport stress, mixing with unfamiliar animals, and high density. Mud and heat during adverse weather create physical discomfort that cannot be avoided in open feedlots. Welfare certification schemes that require respiratory disease monitoring, low-stress handling, shade provision, and dietary transition management represent meaningful improvement over conventional feedlot practice.
