Dog Anxiety Medication: Welfare Evidence for Pharmaceutical Intervention

Anxiety disorders are among the most common welfare problems in companion dogs. Modern veterinary pharmacology offers effective treatments, yet medication is underused due to stigma and misunderstanding.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Anxiety disorders in dogs cause genuine and prolonged suffering that interferes with quality of life, social interactions, and physical health. The reluctance of some owners to use medication - rooted in concerns about 'drugging' their dog or fears about side effects - often leaves dogs in unnecessary distress when effective, safe treatments exist. Veterinary behavioral medicine has made enormous strides in developing evidence-based pharmacological approaches to canine anxiety. Just as we would not expect a human with clinical anxiety to resolve their condition through behavior change alone, we should not expect dogs with neurobiological anxiety disorders to be fixed without addressing the underlying neuroscience.
