Farmed Goose Welfare Beyond Foie Gras

While goose welfare debate has focused on foie gras production, the welfare of conventionally farmed geese for meat and feathers raises separate and underappreciated concerns.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Conventional goose farming for meat creates welfare deficits that are distinct from but as significant as the foie gras debate. Geese denied water access for bathing and swimming show persistent attempts to perform water-related bathing behaviours using dry substrates - a clear indicator of frustrated motivation. The strong pair bond that geese form means that separation from partners or established social groups causes demonstrable distress. Indoor intensive systems without outdoor access prevent geese from ranging and foraging - behaviours that constitute a large proportion of their natural time budget. Higher welfare goose production demonstrating outdoor access and water provision exists commercially, but represents a small minority of global production.
