Farm Animal Welfare

Farmed Duck Water Access and Welfare

Ducks are strongly motivated to use water for bathing and foraging, and denial of open water access in commercial duck farming causes significant frustration of natural behaviour and welfare compromise.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Duck water access is a case study in frustrated motivation. The strong drive to access water for bathing and bill cleaning in ducks persists even when physical needs (hydration) are met by nipple drinkers. Ducks provided only nipple drinkers show repetitive bill-wiping and head-shaking behaviours that represent frustrated attempts to perform bathing. Eye and nasal discharge are more common in ducks without water access as they cannot clean their mucous membranes effectively. The welfare argument for water provision is among the most straightforward in farm animal science - the behaviour is strongly motivated, its absence causes demonstrable frustration, and provision is technically achievable in commercial systems with appropriate management.
