Reptile welfare failures are endemic in companion animal keeping because the gap between their apparent simplicity — they do not vocalise distress, they are not visibly active, they seem content — and their actual complexity is enormous. A bearded dragon with metabolic bone disease from inadequate UV-B lighting is suffering significant skeletal pain and weakness that the owner may not recognise until deformity is advanced. Thermal requirements that are not met cause immunosuppression and susceptibility to respiratory infection. The complexity of proper reptile husbandry requires research before acquisition and ongoing investment in appropriate equipment. Education at point of sale — honest about the difficulty and cost of proper care — is a fundamental welfare intervention that most reptile retailers fail to provide.
