Rooting is the most highly motivated natural behaviour in pigs, and providing appropriate enrichment materials to satisfy this drive is one of the most effective welfare interventions available in pig farming.
Rooting enrichment welfare is both legally required and scientifically validated as one of the highest-impact welfare interventions available in pig farming. Pigs denied appropriate rooting substrate develop chronic frustration states that manifest in tail biting, aggression, and stereotypic behaviours. Providing straw or other manipulable materials not only reduces these behaviours but actively creates positive welfare states - pigs engaged in rooting exploration show behavioural indicators of positive affect. The challenge on many farms is enrichment quality and novelty: providing a small amount of straw that is immediately consumed does not constitute adequate enrichment. Effective enrichment requires sufficient quantity for all animals to engage simultaneously, and regular rotation to maintain novelty and interest.
