Wild Deer: Vehicle Collision Welfare and Prevention

Deer-vehicle collisions cause enormous suffering to wildlife annually, with injured deer often dying slowly and unseen following road strikes in the UK and globally.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Deer road casualties represent a major source of preventable animal suffering. Animals killed outright at impact are spared prolonged suffering, but many survive initial collision with severe internal injuries, broken legs, or spinal damage. These animals often drag themselves into cover where they die slowly over hours or days in pain and fear. Rapid reporting to police or wildlife networks allows dispatch of trained personnel who can assess and humanely dispatch severely injured animals, preventing prolonged suffering. Prevention through infrastructure and driver behaviour reduces the problem at source.
