Rapid recognition and treatment of blowfly strike in sheep is the single most important individual welfare intervention during summer months, preventing prolonged severe suffering.
Blowfly strike welfare outcomes depend entirely on detection speed. A sheep found within hours of strike can be treated with full recovery; one found after 48-72 hours may have extensive tissue damage, secondary sepsis, and severe systemic illness. The challenge in extensive hill farming is that flocks cover large areas and daily checking is not always practical. Technology solutions including accelerometers detecting abnormal behaviour and remote monitoring are beginning to address this gap. The welfare imperative is clear: anything that reduces the time between strike onset and detection directly prevents days of severe suffering.
