Thunderstorm phobia is one of the most common and severe anxiety disorders in dogs, with panic responses that cause significant suffering and often worsen without evidence-based intervention.
Thunderstorm phobia causes genuine fear and panic in affected dogs - the physiological arousal of a full fear response is not trivial suffering. Dogs with severe phobia may self-injure attempting to escape, develop secondary anxiety conditions, and experience repeated traumatic episodes across their lifetime. Early intervention is far more successful than treating established severe phobia. The most effective approaches use systematic desensitization to recorded storm sounds combined with counterconditioning, initiated during calm weather and progressed slowly. Veterinary behaviorists and clinical animal behaviorists should be involved in severe cases, as prescription anxiolytic medication often plays an essential role.
