Cubicle housing for dairy cows dominates modern dairy farming, but design flaws in cubicle systems are a leading cause of lameness, injury, and behavioral restriction.
Cubicle design is one of the most tractable welfare improvement opportunities in modern dairy farming. The science of cubicle dimensions, surface properties, and layout is well established, yet suboptimal designs remain common in existing dairy infrastructure. Cows in well-designed cubicles with appropriate bedding show lower lameness prevalence, fewer hock injuries, longer daily lying times, and better body condition. Welfare assessments that include lying time measurements, hock lesion scoring, and cubicle occupancy rates can identify problems and motivate improvement. Providing one cubicle per cow plus additional space for social negotiation is the recognized minimum standard.
