Access to clean, fresh water is a fundamental welfare requirement for feedlot cattle, and inadequate water provision is a significant and underappreciated welfare concern.
Water deprivation causes acute welfare harm very rapidly in cattle - thirst is one of the most aversive states animals experience, and in hot conditions can become dangerous within hours. Feedlot water welfare requires not just that water is technically available, but that all animals in the pen can access adequate quantities regardless of social hierarchy. Trough space requirements, water flow rates sufficient to meet peak demand, and protection of water sources from contamination or freezing are all welfare requirements that may not be met in poorly managed feedlot systems. Water quality - freedom from contamination, appropriate temperature - also significantly affects intake and welfare.
