Companion Dog Dental Disease Prevention

Dental disease is the most prevalent health problem in domestic dogs, yet remains chronically under-treated, causing chronic pain that significantly affects quality of life.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Chronic dental pain represents one of the most prevalent and underappreciated welfare problems in companion dogs. Because dogs rarely show obvious signs of dental pain - they generally continue to eat - owners and even vets may underestimate the welfare burden of advanced periodontal disease. Regular veterinary dental examinations, dental radiography, and professional cleaning are as important to canine welfare as vaccination and parasite control. Home dental care including daily brushing, dental chews, and water additives can significantly slow the progression of periodontal disease when started early. The earlier prevention begins, the more effective it is - puppies should be introduced to tooth brushing as part of normal early socialization.
