Dogs can develop post-traumatic stress disorder following severe or repeated trauma. Recognising PTSD in dogs and providing appropriate support is vital for their long-term psychological wellbeing.
PTSD in dogs represents genuine psychological suffering that can severely impair quality of life. Affected dogs may be unable to feel safe in normal environments, exhibit extreme fear responses to minor triggers, and struggle to form trusting relationships. Treatment requires a multi-modal approach: creating safe, predictable environments; systematic desensitisation under clinical guidance; and where necessary, anxiolytic or antidepressant medication. Patience and avoiding force or punishment are essential. Many traumatised dogs make significant recoveries with appropriate support.
