Blowfly strike (flystrike) is one of the most painful and rapidly progressing welfare emergencies in sheep farming. Understanding prevention and early detection is vital for flock welfare.
Flystrike causes extreme suffering - the sensation of larvae consuming living tissue is one of the most acute pain states documented in farm animals. Affected sheep show characteristic stamping, biting at affected areas, and rapid deterioration. The condition is entirely preventable with appropriate management including shearing, dagging, wound management, and strategic insecticide use. Mortality without prompt treatment is high. Daily flock inspection during the risk season, combined with preventive measures, is the cornerstone of welfare-positive flystrike management.
