Feather destructive behaviour (FDB) in companion parrots is a complex welfare problem with multiple potential causes. Understanding prevention and early intervention is key to parrot psychological wellbeing.
Feather destructive behaviour is both a symptom and a cause of welfare compromise - the underlying stress or frustration drives the behaviour, which itself causes physical harm and potentially perpetuates anxiety. Prevention is far more effective than treatment. Parrots are highly intelligent, social, long-lived animals with complex needs that most captive environments fail to meet adequately. Providing extensive foraging opportunities, consistent social interaction, appropriate flock contact, and a varied, stimulating environment from the beginning of captive life represents the welfare-positive approach to parrot keeping.
